FileZilla – Your free home FTP Solution.

FileZilla ICONHaving an FTP and file server at your home is a very useful thing to have. By having a central point in your home where everything is stored and have the ability to share everything you need across your home network.

Now, if you are going to grab files from your home while you are away there are a few things you should really keep in mind before doing this.

  • Having it exposed to the outside world will make you available to brute force attacks (mostly from Russia that I’ve noticed).
  • Make sure you have your ports forwarded to the server.  You can set this up in your routers administration panel > Port Forwarding.
  • Do you have high bandwidth on your connection?  I would recommend having at least 2Mb up (~240 kbps upload speed).

Today since we are working with windows we will be talking about FileZilla FTP Server.  Why not IIS on Server 2k3?  Keep Reading…

Why I will never buy another “Games for Windows” product.

by amp on Sep.08, 2009, under PC, Products, Reviews & Previews, XBox 360

I have always loved the GTA Series. I’ve played them all.shoot_the_tires-640x

This is more of a rant on the problems I have encountered and why I will never purchase another “Games for Windows” title.

1.   SecuROM

  • I have never liked this system at all. Sure it’s a way for game producers to “fight” illegal copying but it doesn’t really work. As soon as a game comes out, it is already on major P2P networks and is already cracked. Installing GTA4for PC also installed SecuROM which has actually been looked upon in the community as a type of spyware because of it’s hidden code that you just can’t get rid of manually.
  • After installing I created an ISO of Disk 1. Why? Because I tend to not take very good care of my discs. Most of all, I hate swapping discs every time I want to play a different game. I mounted the ISO and viola! “EMULATIONSOFTWARE DETECTED!” … thanks guys.

2.   Register TWICE to play Multiplayergta4

  • That’s right. Twice. Once for “WINDOWS LIVE!” and another for “Rockstar Social Club” or whatever it was.
  • Special Note : You CAN use your XBOX Live account to play “WINDOWS LIVE!”

Do you like RSS Feeds?

by amp on Sep.04, 2009, under PC, Reviews & Previews

FeedRollerAlmost every website nowadays has an RSS Feed so that you can keep up to date with whatever they post.  Kind of like a twitter for websites.

Some of the more popular applications like Thunderbird have RSS Feed ability built right into them.

Today we take a look at “FeedRoller”, which just so happens to also be by Sector-Seven, the creators of “ControlPad” the program we reviewed a few days ago that lets you run customized tasks using numbers, words, and symbols.

FeedRoller is an application designed to scroll RSS feeds and twitter updates across your screen.  You can pause, scroll back and forth, and unclip the program from the top of the screen.

“FeedRoller is a lightweight RSS and Twitter feed ticker.
It is designed to show scrolling headlines from your favorite news sites, blogs and twitter account, directly on your desktop.”

…and guess what?

It comes in a portable version.

Our Favorite Browsers

Browser competition.foxchrome

It’s what motivated Microsoft to jump from IE6 to IE7, and now, to IE8.  The spread of Firefox is what led Microsoft to add tabbed-browsing to IE.  Sure there were others before it that did nearly the same thing, but Firefox has spread like…well, fire.

Firefox ranks good with me just because of it’s “addon” feature, in which their library is completely filled with a plugin for almost everything you could think of.  Some of the more popular ones would be Ad-Block and it’s update.  Right now we have a popular coming from the midst.

Google Chrome.  It has been out in beta for a while and is still being updated all the time.  I’m actually using the developer version.  Sure the dev release isn’t the most stable but, I get extra features.  Over-all here at the office we are big fans of Chrome.

If you haven’t tried it I suggest you give it a shot.
